Pinterest Hair Challenge #3: Triple pinned braids!

HAPPY THURSDAY! It's time for my "Pinterest Weekly Hair Challenge"! As you might already know, I've been posting hairstyles inspired by tutorials and pictures from Pinterest. Each week, I've posted the original inspiration pin here for you to follow along with! You can follow my entire hairstyle board, "Hair Pretties", on Pinterest, or find my entire profile @Channystar! What's the point? Just to try something new and be honest about awesome successes and epic fails when it comes to Pinterest tutorials. Follow along with me!

This week's first pic is something I'm dubbing "Triple Pinned Braids". Quite easy: create three  braids at the nape of your neck, spread out to the sides and middle. Secure braids at the beginning and end with elastics. Once braids are finished, roll into buns and secure near the nape of the neck with bobbypins!

This look took me about ten minutes to complete.  I used about twenty bobby pins, because I can't STAND it when my hairstyle feels like it will fall out!  Because my hair is a little longer than the model shown, my braids were a little tighter looking, which I didn't mind.

Once sprayed, this hairstyle held very well.  I'd say it was very easy to create, and makes a pretty summer look for the office or maybe with a cute sundress!

Check out the original pin below and don't forget to follow along. Post your hair pictures on the Thrift Trick facebook page or tweet your images @ThriftTrick!

OVERALL TIP:  I would suggest braiding your hair as far to the ends as you can, because it creates less spiky ends "poking out" from the pinned buns once you are ready to pin them up.

Pinterest Hair Challenge: Hairstyle #2 (Mermaid Braid)

HEY EVERYBODY! I'm back again for my "Pinterest Weekly Hair Challenge"! As mentioned before, each week I'll be posting two new hairstyles inspired by tutorials and pictures from Pinterest. I'll be sure to post the original inspiration pin here for you to follow along with! You can follow my entire hairstyle board, "Hair Pretties", on Pinterest, or find my entire profile @Channystar! What's the point? Just to try something new and be honest about awesome successes and epic fails when it comes to Pinterest tutorials. Follow along with me!

This week's second pic was a "Mermaid Braid". Pretty simple: create two dutch style braids to the side and simply "pin" the middles together with bobbypins! I used three small elastics and about 6 or 7 bobby pins for this look. My one complaint was that it was hard for me to hide the bobby pins. I did, however, get compliments on this braid today, and I was impressed with how well it actually stayed in! Check out the original pin below and don't forget to follow along. Post your hair pictures on the Thrift Trick facebook page or tweet your images @ThriftTrick!

OVERALL TIP: I think to really achieve a nice looking, wider "mermaid style" braid IF you have long hair like me, you might want to try doing THREE braids together. This is how I will do it next time!

My new color obsession: Royal Blue and Leopard

ROYAL BLUE AND LEOPARD PRINT!

It's my new color combination obsession!

I go through phases. Lately, I've been into pairing rusty brown and salmon with unusual colors. There's always something intriguing about the "unexpected" when it comes to ensembles; it's the special flare that turns an outfit from great to fantastic.

Also favored this year were the combinations of emerald and leopard/tiger print and a buttercup yellow and snakeskin!

Royal blue and leopard aren't any less fabulous. There's something so regal about this color combination. It's crisp, complex, and it demands attention!  See my mobile image below for a snapshot of how I did royal blue and leopard the other day (a royal blue shift, gold accessories and leopard wedge sandals), and feast your eyes on some delicious images I've pinned today for your viewing pleasure!

Don't forget to follow the entire board (which contains all of these images and MORE) on my Pinterest site, here:

Hair Today: Pinteresting

PINTEREST WEEKLY HAIR CHALLENGE!

Pictured above is my first image in my fun new challenge and mobile pic series, "Pinterest Weekly Hair Challenge"! Each week I'll be posting two new hairstyles inspired by tutorials and pictures from Pinterest.

This week's choice was a bit of a "twist" on a low, nape of the neck bun. It was an entirely simple process that started with a simple low ponytail. I used a hairtie, 6-7 large bobbypins and a flower clip (which I made in a DIY a few years ago)!  The result was very elegant and stayed in all day. I'd say this look was a win!  Check out the original pin below and don't forget to follow along. Post your hair pictures on the Thrift Trick facebook page or tweet your images @ThriftTrick!

Guerilla street fashion at Hatter Days: Holland, Michigan

I had a great time stumbling upon the New Holland Brewery Hatter days 2013 this weekend on on a Holland day trip by complete accident! How I missed the hype for this West Michigan brewing town event I don't know, but it was a ton of fun. Michigan craft brew was flowing and circus performers dressed to the theme of Alice and Wonderland ran haphazardly through the blocked off streets, which housed beer on tap as well as performance stages for groups like Michigan's The Crane Wives and Maps and Atlases.

I myself am more of a "spirits" gal, so I really enjoy New Holland's artisan vodkas (they have lots of yummy flavors like citrus and other fruity culminations).  However, I have to say that (even though I prefer stouts and porters to IPA's) I sampled some of my boyfriend's Michigan Hatter and it was pretty darn good!

I didn't pack along the SLR camera in the name of light traveling, but I couldn't resist grabbing a few guerrilla fashion photos for you. I also have a few iPhone pictures to share of what I wore Saturday: a cropped jean jacket, thrifted black and white striped tee, thrifted black capris and thrifted red suede Nine West Heels. The small red leather satchel was also a secondhand find, along with the enamel cuff, which I also featured in my last outfit post: White Jeans: It's Memorial Day!

Read on for a few more fun fashion highlights. Hope your week is off to a great start!

I LOVED this sheer elephant print tunic.
The pattern is so fun and I'm also really loving the burnt orange color.

Yellow is a fantastic way to brighten up and modernize a nautical look. Next time you are
finding yourself a little tired of the classic red, white and blue, throw in a pop of bright yellow or nude! This combo caught my eye outside and I stole in for a shot of the evidence.

Fashion statement?  What do human pretzels wear these days, anyhow?

P.S.:  We escaped the busy crowd across the street for just a bit to enjoy some dinner and folk music at The Curragh! The environment is cozy and the service was great.  I really liked the veggie burger I ordered and I'd recommend it as a great dinner or lunch stop on your tour of Holland!
